Bhimbetka is now a World Heritage site - well-kept, well-presented with clear signage. Some of the paintings may be as old as 100,000 years ago, more solidly dated are those in the range of 30,000 years old. The area contains more than 750 caves inhabited at various periods. Twelve caves with extensive painting have been connected by a 1.5 km. walking trails with railings protecting the images. The site is well off the usual tourist trail and had only a handful of visitors when I was there. For me it was an intense and humbling experience to be literally in the places our ancient ancestors lived.
