9.35. Aden, as drawn by a Portuguese artist in the 1550’s. Abraham bin Yiju apprenticed there as a trader in the thirteenth century and Ma Huan visited the port in the fifteenth century. The straight masted vessels are Portuguese of the type Tome’ Pires sailed into Guangzhou harbor. The lanteen–rigged craft are vessels from the region.
